Irresponsibility

This spiritual urban legend, when taken to an extreme, can also lead to an epidemic of irresponsibility. After all, if God guarantees that everything will eventually work out for good no matter what, who cares what I put into the equation? God will patch it up. He has to. He's promised.

I've watched such thinking produce a pattern of ridiculous risk taking, conveniently labeled as steps of faith. Yet, most of the time, my friends' so-called steps of faith (whether it was taking a huge financial risk, ditching their career to move across country, or simply putting all their chips on red) had nothing to do with following God's leading. He hadn't told anyone to specifically do anything. But no matter, like the fool in Proverbs, my friends ignored the warning signs of danger and the advice of prudent friends and kept on going, confident that if things didn't work out, God would bail them out.7

Sadly, when he didn't, some of them railed at God. But it's wasn't God's fault for not coming through—it was their fault for running through a plethora of warning signs that should have caused any sensible person to come to a screeching halt.8
